What Am I to You?

What Am I to You?

A Surreal Exploration of Femininity in the Modern Era

What Am I to You? questions the role of women in contemporary American society and the transition into womanhood. Inspired by the recent regression of women’s rights and the normalization of misogyny in power, the series explores the objectification of women and the timing of that reduction to a mere sexual object, things often defined not by choice, but by society and cultural norms.

In this surreal body of work, I replace Magritte’s iconic male figure with a vinyl blow-up doll, a hollow, mass-produced symbol of feminine objectification. I replace the green apple with contemporary emojis of sexuality, the cherry and the peach, shifting the conversation to today’s digital shorthand for desire and purity. Each painting stages the female body as both subject and commodity, reflecting the dissonance between autonomy and the projections placed upon women in modern culture. As the subject becomes aware, the fruit falls away and the subject reclaims agency. Eyes signaling awareness and readiness to challenge.

Through this series, I invite viewers to confront their own assumptions: What role have you taken on and is it what you want? What roles do we want our daughters to see and value? Can we influence the role we play in our home, our work, and within our community with more intention?

Complexities of Life

The PURSUIT of self in modern society

The Complexities of Life emerged from my experience as a mother, exploring our sense of identity, culture, and the emotional landscapes shaped by our need for belonging. Through in-depth conversations with subjects, each portrait draws from their personal histories, shaping both the figure and the botanical patterns that surround them as an act of love and meditation on the individual’s experiences with persecution and resilience.

Inspired by contemporary portraitists and old masters, my work focuses on marginalized identities and those most vulnerable. I wrap subjects in the patterns and textiles of home as symbols of childhood, protection, and our struggle to define our place in the world. The movement of elements rising from the background to entangle the subject conveys the way in which our past experiences, relationships, and challenges ripple through our adult lives.

FROM CHATEAU D'ORQUEVAUX 2024

Created during the artist’s time at the transformative international artist residency at the Chateau d'Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France in November of 2024. This time marked the transition for Jacobson to fully embrace her artistic practice.

The pieces in this collection were inspired by the grounds, the people in attendance, and the times.

The Chateau Collection

Havana nights

Our rituals tell a story: what might be a ritual of celebration for one may be a ritual of mourning for another.

The Havana Nights collection blends narrative and atmosphere to explore the rituals that bring us together and sometimes drive us apart. Each work is a story, a moment that can feel celebratory or sad, joyful or uncertain. In this collection, each scene holds room for either, leaving space for the viewer to see themselves reflected in their experiences in the moment.

Out west

The air feels different. The skies are bigger. The land unfolds before you at a scale unseen. There is a sense of calm serenity. And we are free.
