About the Show
What Am I to You? questions the role of women in contemporary American society and the transition into womanhood. Inspired by the recent regression of women’s rights and the normalization of misogyny in power, the series explores the objectification of women and the timing of that reduction to a mere sexual object, things often defined not by choice, but by society and cultural norms.
In this surreal body of work, I replace Magritte’s iconic male figure with a vinyl blow-up doll, a hollow, mass-produced symbol of feminine objectification. I replace the green apple with contemporary emojis of sexuality, the cherry and the peach, shifting the conversation to today’s digital shorthand for desire and purity. Each painting stages the female body as both subject and commodity, reflecting the dissonance between autonomy and the projections placed upon women in modern culture. As the subject becomes aware, the fruit falls away and the subject reclaims agency. Eyes signaling awareness and readiness for a challenge.
Through this series, I invite viewers to confront their own assumptions: What role have you taken on and is it what you want? What roles do we want our daughters to see and value? Can we influence the role we play in our home, our work, and within our community with more intention?
As part of the show, I ask viewers to consider taking a more active role within their communities and to engage deeper with their local politics. To learn more about elections happening in your area and the individuals running for office, visit https://www.vote411.org. Put together by the League of Women Voters, this website provides details on elections to include brief summaries of each person running for office and their policy views.
If you do not know if you are eligible to vote, this site can help. If you need to register to vote, this site can help. If you need more information, this site can help. If you know that you cannot vote, consider volunteering for an organization that supports the topics you are concerned about. The League of Women Voters is a great place to start.
Men rush through city streets, absorbed in the rhythm of daily work. Women move through the same space, too often reduced to objects, mere play things, within the chaos.
In a world that is 50% female, women hold just 28% of federal legislative seats leaving men to disproportionately shape decisions that affect women.
This work is a call for engagement. Speak to a neighbor. Learn about the people running for local office. Pay attention to who holds power - and choose to participate. Vote. Volunteer. Change begins in small, deliberate acts.

At the edge of a cliff, a young girl looks upward as she plays with a doll-like figure. No one stands beside her. No one intervenes. A flamingo lingers nearby - ornamental, absurd, incapable of action.
Shaped within a culture that continues to excuse the mistreatment of women, the work reflects what is quietly permitted. Children do not learn from what we say. They learn from what we do and what we normalize. What we elevate. What we dismiss. What we allow to pass without consequence.
What, then, is this young girl meant to aspire to?
